Well as you all know I've been looking for a second car. I've looked at a ton of things with this budget of around $1000, including a ton of 240s, A Crown Vic P71, Mercury Cougar XR-7, VW Cabrio, Volvo 740 Turbo Wagon, and now this: 2000 V70R.

Here's the issue. My parents don't really want me to have a second car. Since I am only 16 and live with them, I pretty much have to listen. And I see their point. I have a 2013 Honda Civic that does everything it needs to and a second car would be silly to have. But its just... boring. It isn't me. Which is why I've wanted something else.

When I saw this ad listing a V70R for $2000 I expected the worse. Either super high miles, awful body, or a fried motor. But this was none of these things. It was a diamond in the rough so to speak. The only issue was the price itself, as its a bit more than I budgeted. I do however have family who could loan me the money (I work so am always making money, I just don't have it right this second to spend).

I drove it today. And oh my gosh. I was in love. This is the best car I have ever driven off Craigslist. I loved the noise it made. Speed built up so quickly. The seats were super comfortable. The Bose sound system still worked great. Ice cold AC. No weird lights or warnings on the dashboard either. I was in love. It also looked great, apart from the white bumper (he had an incident with a shopping cart and that was the first V70 bumper he could find at the pick n pull yard). He also had two spares in addition to the one in the trunk (also from that white V70). As I left his house without it, I felt sad. Because I enjoyed driving it more than my Civic. I would gladly DD this. No questions asked. It was perfect. I began thinking of how I could buy it.

As I was talking with mom, she came up with a brilliant idea. One that was almost too good to be true. Her car is 07 Honda Pilot and she is tired of the awful gas mileage. Dad also would like some more cash to have. So, we can sell the Pilot for about $11,000. Mom would take over my lease on the Civic. Now she has a new, very efficient car. I get the V70R. Now I have my DD and we still have the practicality the Pilot offered. By doing this, its a win win win situation.

We still need to pitch this idea to Dad, who is the stickler of the group. But what does Oppo think of this plan? What do you think of this car? Let me know please!

Yes it has been for about two or three now. But he finally lowered the price a month ago because he now has it unregistered and uninsured. He needs it gone now (so works for me).

His issue is he has it listed in the wrong section really and is so old unless you specifically search for V70R it'll never show up.

He said i was the first to contact him in about two weeks about it

He very well might be. The thing stopping him from letting me get a car is the fact I have the Civic. Mom has been asking for a new car for months now. The Pilot is paid off and gets like 12 MPG (all local driving). Dad has been wanting extra money. And being that this is a wagon, its just as practical. It really is a smart idea

Well Mom actually came up with a great idea:

Geeez, I had no idea they got such terrible milage. But it really does seem like a win-win-win! I kinda wish I had a V70, I feel like they would handle better than my 960, and would have more parts available. And dat inline 5

Its rated at like 16 city but because its older now and the fact that the commute isnt very far, it gets very poor like that. We get about 18 on the highway since it does cylinder deactivation but the Civic is much better!

Im assuming it was the AWD but the handling on this was amazing. I was always looking at Volvo Wagons for my first car hunt!

How do you like the 960 though???

Make sure and get the Volvo inspected by an independent mechanic before you give over the cash. It might need 4 grand in repairs ....

since when does an incident with a shopping cart require a new bumper?

Get under there and check the body. HARD. A quick bumper swap is a huge red flag in my book. Also, try and find out if it's the the original turbo. Not to shoot you down, but this is a way more complex machine than your Honda and parts ain't cheap. Tread carefully.

Any idea why it hasn't sold at such a low price? Another big flag...

Well since it was the R Bumper it had the low lip spoiler. And he said it was already Beat up from 14 years of driving. The shopping Cart just cracked it enough to need replacing.

I was under it briefly and it looked fine. I had a friend run a Carfax and it came back clean.

I will need to ask about the turbo. Because I am not sure there.

Why it hasn't sold? He actually has the car posted in the wrong city on Craigslist. And its now 28 days old. So its buried. Unless you specifically search "V70R" it won't show up. Not many people search for these here.

There is some possibility he literally never did a timing belt which means it does need one tomorrow. That could easily add $1-2k to your purchase price. BUT then you'd have a fresh timing belt, which is nice.

I was talking with the seller. He got the car about 3 years ago right at 100,000 miles. He put about 30,000 miles on since. The previous owner did the cam seals and radiator and crankshaft (seller has receipts of it I just never looked) So I'd like to think if that was done he'd do the belt too. But I will go back tomorrow and look if there is a sticker saying it.

Im a little disappointed that it's not a 60's one. It's cool that that generation had indpendent rear suspension but I wish it was one of the 5.0's instead of the 4.6s.

At the end of the day - Mercury is always the answer.

is your budget up to 2k?

Because for example my 68 Montego was only 2500.

If you're not trying to buy a 69 Charger or a 70 Chevelle, you can get some surprisingly cheap muscle in the lesser known cars
